Cyanotype Workshop (version française)
This workshop will introduce one of the oldest photographic processes (invented in 1842). Cyanotypes can be done year round but the Summer months are ideal as the sun is the perfect light source for making our final prints. The class will cover all technical details: list of chemistry, instructions on how to prepare the emulsion, suggestions about best support materials to use, hints about best methods of applying emulsion, how to evaluate an exposure as well as how to prepare digital negatives. Cyanotype is one of the simplest "alternative photo" techniques and is a process that pleases painters and printmakers as much as it does photographers. Students will leave the workshop having the necessary foundations to be able to begin working on their own without needing expensive chemistry or equipment!
We'll concentrate on two approaches for the workshop. To begin with we'll look at ways of making "photograms" using thin objects (flowers, leaves, string, etc.) to capture "shadow pictures" of the objects. These were the first type of photographic images made in the early 19th century. Next, working with digital images (from virtually any type of digital camera) we'll cover how to transform these images into negatives that can be used to make cyanotypes as "positives." We'll discuss details of how to transform these original images to get the best possible "negatives" for use with the cyanotype emulsion. We'll print a small selection of negatives on two different printers to show different options that are available to students. At the end of the workshop students will have a number of different cyanotype images and the knowledge necessary to continue on their own!
What to bring:
• We'll provide all the basic materials (chemistry, papers, brushes, etc.).
• small, flat objects (flowers, leaves) to be used to make some "photograms" (no need to bring a large bouquet of flowers; just two or three small flowers or leaves will be adequate)
• Digital photo images on CD, DVD or USB key
The digital images can be black and white or color. We'll be printing up to about A4 size so be sure your images are at least 240 dpi up to this size. We'll be printing a small selection of these images on two different printers to create our negatives to be used in making the cyanotype positives.
Other recommendations:
• No previous photo experience necessary!
• As we'll be working in a darkroom setting with chemistry, be sure not to wear delicate clothing. We have gloves and aprons but it's best to come with work clothes.
